Use the Five Letter Word List With Your Wordle Clues

A five letter word list becomes useful when you stop treating it as a giant dictionary and start feeding it the information your board already gave you. Enter letters that are fixed in the correct positions, add letters that must appear somewhere in the word, exclude letters that no longer fit, and use the repeated-letter or vowel filters only when those facts are actually known.

The goal is not to guess today’s answer for you. The page does not look up the current solution and then place it at the top. It filters a general English dictionary using the letter clues you enter. That means a matching word can be useful for brainstorming without being an official Wordle answer, and some uncommon dictionary forms may not be accepted by the game.

Think of the five letter word list as a word finder: you supply the evidence from your board, and the page returns words whose spelling fits that evidence. Your board should always take priority.

Start With the Green Letters

Green tiles are the simplest filters because their positions are fixed. If the second letter is A and the fifth letter is E, enter those letters in positions two and five. Leave the unknown positions blank. A pattern like _ A _ _ E immediately removes every dictionary word that does not match that frame.

Do not move a green letter just to test another word unless you are deliberately playing outside the revealed constraints in normal mode. If you are using Hard Mode, the official game requires revealed hints to be used on later guesses, so a word finder is most helpful when you keep those fixed positions in place from the beginning.

When several green letters are known, resist the urge to focus only on words that come to mind first. Familiar patterns often have more possible endings than expected. The five letter word list can show you whether your mental shortlist is broad or narrow before you spend another guess.

Add Yellow Letters Without Locking Them Into the Wrong Place

A yellow letter belongs in the answer but not in the position where you tested it. That creates two pieces of information: the letter must be present, and at least one position is forbidden for that copy.

If you only use the “contains letters” field, you capture the first rule but not the second. Open “Position-specific letter clues” and enter the yellow letter in the position where it cannot appear. This is especially useful when the same letter has been tried in more than one place across several guesses.

For example, suppose R is yellow in position two and later yellow again in position four. A possible word must contain R, but R cannot occupy either of those positions. Entering those restrictions prevents the list from returning words that technically contain R but contradict your board.

Yellow tiles are also where duplicate-letter mistakes become common. If a guess contains two copies of the same letter, read both tiles together before deciding how many copies the answer requires.

Use Gray Letters Carefully When a Letter Repeats

A gray letter usually tells you not to use that letter again, but repeated letters create an important exception. Imagine you guess a word containing two E’s. If one E is green or yellow and the other is gray, the answer still contains E; the gray tile may only tell you that there is no additional copy beyond the one already matched.

That is why the five letter word list lets you express presence and exclusion separately. Do not add E to “Without letters” if another E is already green or yellow; that would remove E from the results entirely.

If you know a letter appears twice, enter it twice in “Contains letters” — for example, EE. A repeated-letter filter can further narrow the list when the board clearly shows that at least one character occurs more than once.

A Practical Example After Two Guesses

Suppose your first two guesses leave you with the following information:

• the first position is S;
• the final position is E;
• A is present but cannot be in position two;
• T and R are absent;
• no repeated letter has been confirmed.

Start by entering S in the first position and E in the fifth. Add A as a required letter, record that A cannot use position two, and exclude T and R. Do not select “no repeated letters” unless your board actually proves it; absence of evidence for a repeat is not the same as proof that every letter is unique.

Now review the matching words. Some may be obscure or not accepted by the official game because the source is a general dictionary. Use the list to generate candidates, then apply your own vocabulary, remaining guesses and previous tile feedback. A five letter word list is strongest as an organizing tool, not as an oracle.

Why This Is a General English Dictionary

The word data on this page comes from an open English word list with its source and license shown on the page. That gives the filter a broad set of five-letter words to work with, but breadth has a tradeoff: the list includes uncommon words, inflected forms and entries that may not be accepted by the official game.

A result means only that the spelling matches your filters. It does not prove that the word is an accepted Wordle guess or a possible official answer. If the official game rejects a word, choose another candidate without assuming the filter is broken.

A matching result is simply a word whose spelling fits the filters you entered. Treat it as a candidate to compare with your board, not as proof that the official game will accept or choose that word.
